SURVEY LAB

OBJECTIVE

At the end of the course the student will posses knowledge about Survey field techniques.

Surveying Laboratory is used to introduce the concept of survey through practical experiment. Main aim of this lab is to make the students familiarize with the basic surveying techniques. Surveying is the technique, profession, and science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional position of points and the distances and angles between them. A land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. These points are usually on the surface of the Earth, and they are often used to establish land maps and boundaries for ownership, locations like building corners or the surface location of subsurface features.

Surveyors work with elements of geometry, trigonometry, analysis, engineering, programming languages and the law. Surveying has been an element in the development of the human environment since the beginning of recorded history. The planning and execution of most forms of construction require it. It is also used in transport, communications, mapping, and the definition of legal boundaries for land ownership. It is an important tool for research in many other scientific disciplines

At the end of the course student attains adequate knowledge in assessing both Physical and Engineering behaviour of soils through laboratory testing procedures.

The primary goal of this laboratory is to introduce junior and senior level undergraduate students to Geotechnical Engineering to understand the basic principles of soil mechanics (CE 6405). Students conduct standard laboratory experiments to classify soil and determine the mechanical properties such as permeability, compaction, consolidation, and strength. The properties of soil are critical for application in the design of foundations, dams, retaining walls, tunnels, offshore structures, and slope stability analysis. This laboratory work is supportive to the lecture material in Soil Mechanics (CE 6405) and is a prerequisite to coursework that may include Foundations Engineering (CE 6502) and more advanced elective courses in Geotechnics.
